About 45 minutes by tuk-tuk or taxi from the city center, it’s less a spiritual sanctuary and more a surreal fever dream brought to life by a single, eccentric monk and his students in the late 1950s. We’re talking hundreds of massive, weathered concrete sculptures depicting Buddhist and Hindu deities, demons, and beasts. Some are crumbling, others are pristine, all are utterly captivating. You can climb inside a giant pumpkin-like structure to explore a multi-level depiction of heaven, hell, and earth, or marvel at the colossal reclining Buddha.
