When the streetlights flicker on, the historic Piazza district really comes alive. It’s got that old-school charm mixed with a buzzing, youthful crowd. You’ll find a mix of traditional azmaribets – where storytellers sing folk music – and more modern spots. It's a bit gritty, a lot authentic, and always an experience. Don't be afraid to wander; some of the best moments are found down an unexpected side street. While you won't find a single "best" spot, look for places with lively crowds spilling out onto the pavement – that’s usually a good sign. It’s a great area to start your night and soak in the local vibe before heading to something a bit more focused.
Jazz, the Ethiopian Way
Addis Ababa has a legendary jazz scene, and it’s unlike anywhere else in the world. This isn't your smoky, quiet New York jazz club; it’s vibrant, soulful, and often makes you want to get up and dance. One of my absolutely essential stops is Jazzamba Lounge (often just called "Jazzamba"). It’s tucked away in the Ghion Hotel compound and truly legendary. The live bands here are incredible, blending traditional Ethiopian melodies with funk, blues, and Latin rhythms. Expect passionate vocals and instrumental solos that will give you goosebumps. It’s a place where locals and travelers mingle, united by the sheer joy of the music. Get there early to snag a good seat, especially on weekends.
Another spot worth checking out for a different flavor of live music, often with a jazz influence, is Fendika Azmari Bet . While primarily an azmari bet , their musical acts often lean into Ethio-jazz, with spontaneous collaborations and incredible energy. It’s a smaller, more intimate venue, and you’ll feel like you’re truly experiencing something uniquely Ethiopian. Clubbing & Dancing
If you’re looking to really let loose and dance until the early hours, head towards the Bole area. This is where you’ll find the more upscale clubs and lounges that cater to a younger, trendier crowd. Flirt Lounge is a perennial favorite, known for its sleek decor, international DJs, and strong cocktails. It gets packed, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, so if you’re not into big crowds, this might be one to skip. But if you’re ready to dance to a mix of Amharic pop, Afrobeats, and global hits, it’s a blast.
Another great option is Gaslight Nightclub at the Sheraton Addis. It’s a more polished experience, with excellent sound and lighting, often hosting themed nights. It’s a good spot if you want reliable quality and a slightly more international crowd. For something a bit more low-key but still with good music, check out some of the smaller lounges dotted around Bole — they often have resident DJs playing a great mix without the intensity of the larger clubs.
Late-Night Bites & Chill Vibes
